Notes For TM Volume 1

I'll take this much credit up front: when Rod Were suggested (and kept on suggesting) we make a live-off-the-floor recording of some of our own songs I did not say no...

I've been ambivalent (to understate the thing) to commit to what may be deemed a "vanity project". That's just my "stuff". I'm glad I agreed to sit across from Rod, sharing one vocal microphone, Rod playing his Gibson or Telecaster or mandolin (or bass); I playing my Guild and blowing a note or two on the jaw iron.

A good friend sat (well...lay) with us while we recorded these songs. He deserves much credit. This was hard work, is my recall, with some laughter for seasoning. The idea was to present ourselves exactly as we are.

Few, if any, overdubs were considered. In the end a couple were used.

As I listen to this collection I noticed the stories are often about movement: people moving from place to place, following the work, following the dreams. People moving through time. And the shifting that happens inside of us; whether we notice it or not.

I thank our mutual friend Gregg Gorrie for making the Introduction that connected Rod and I. I have tremendous regard for Rod's gift of portraiture. Listen and see if you don't agree that he brings colour and dynamics to the "everyday"...

Thanks as well to Richard Chapman who has been a solid support, a musical and spiritual benefactor.

When we share (attempt to sell/extort) our music we take a risk. Every "artist" knows this. I am happy to have taken this leap of faith with my friend and partner Rod Were.

We are, together, The Tiny Montgomerys and this is Volume 1 for you....
